1. Sloppy Joe’s. Sloppy Joe’s is one of the most famous bars in Key West. It’s best known as the favorite watering hole of novelist Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway was even responsible for the name Sloppy Joe’s. The owner, Joe Russel, was a boat captain and friend of Hemingway. After retiring Klausing acted as General Manager Emeritus/Historian and remained active in the business until his passing. The bar began with the end of prohibition in 1933, and was called the Blind Pig, before being renamed Sloppy Joe’s.
